In my mind co sleeping is a wonderful thing. It brought harmony to our house by allowing me to sleep and the kids to eat. We started when Monkey was 3 days old and never looked back. Yeah you here the horror stories – “Your child will never leave your bed, you’ll still be co sleeping when they’re 12.” Well in our house I see co sleeping slowly coming to an end. It is a really bittersweet thing to see happening. It means the babies are getting older and that they don’t need me as much as they used to.
Monkey, as I already said, started co sleeping at 3 days old. Prior to that he was in a pack n play set up next to our bed. He slept in our bed until Princess P was about 5 months old and then he moved to a full sized bed pushed up against ours. From May until maybe around the beginning of the year Big Daddy slept on the full sized bed with Monkey and then weaned himself back into our bed. In May of this year Monkey made the ‘big move’ and we put his bed in his room. I waited for the midnight weakings where he would come back to our room and want to snuggle with us, just like all the horror stories I had heard predicted. But he hasn’t come. With him everything is always easier and much more painless then we expect. I think this is because most of the time we do things on his schedule. We don’t push him to do things, we just suggest and wait for him to make decisions.
Princess P and I spent the first 3 months of her life sleeping sitting up in the living room. She had horrible reflux and it was the only way for her or I to get a peaceful nights sleep. After she got put on Zantac we moved into the bedroom and for about a month and a half all 4 of us coslept together. Now that Monkey’s bed is gone we side-cared the crib that we bought for Monkey (and never used). Occasionally, I put Princess P over there to go to sleep at night but most of the time I use it as a holding station for clean clothes… That is until this week. Princess P has been opting to sleep over there all by herself. At barely 1.5 years old she is already starting to wean herself from our bed. I should have seen it coming, she isn’t as clingy as Monkey and has always been fine to nap all by herself.
Why oh why do they have to grow so fast?
